The Swiss horse breeds Freiberger, Haflinger and Warmblood can be represented as umbrella organisations for the individual breeding organisations. Each breed is divided into five divisions or sections, which differ according to their intended use (type) and the permitted proportion of foreign blood. The proportion of foreign blood ranges from the almost pure original line (0–3 per cent) to the register with up to 50 per cent foreign blood.

The example below illustrates this principle using the Freiberger (Franches-Montagnes) breed and – in parallel – the Swiss Warmblood (Cheval Suisse). It is intended to demonstrate that the ‘umbrella organisation’ model is applicable to all three recognised Swiss horse breeds.

3. New domain: the alphanumeric number

An alphanumeric number is generated for the umbrella organisations of an individual breeding organisation, which indicates the origin and affiliation. This number is used to issue the => Certificate of Origin <= and the life number of foals of a horse breed in accordance with the UELN system.
